Earth Science

In 7th grade science, we passed
            around
Dehydrated ice cream wrapped in foil.
    This, we are told,
is suitable for space travel.

Tomorrow, we'll throw eggs in homemade
                         containers
off the roof of the school
                         to see if they break.

Did it all start like this?
Wondering how high or how fast,
before we end up like Matt Wu's egg,
well-wrapped
             But oozing just the same.

Maybe it's not so great.
After all, when they go to space, to the moon,
They never really leave Earth.
They carry a tiny atmosphere in their helmets, in their ships.
Just enough to stay alive.
